Hi,

I'm trying to tar and compress a software directory wich is almost 4gb in size.
I know how to tar the directory tar -cvf newfile directory, but this obviously exceeds the 2 gb limit. Can some plesase let me know how I can tar and compress a directory+subdirectories in 1 command.

Many Thanks.
Shahin.

Have you thought about using gnu tar? gnu's tar would allow you to do tar -zcvf filename.tar.gz <dir/file>
