tar: 0511-194 Reached end-of-file before expected.

Hi, any idea what tar: 0511-194 Reached end-of-file before expected. means? My tar commands are working, but something is causing this one to fall over. I'm guessing the problem is related to the size of the tar. Is there a limit on it? I'm using AIX 4.3.3.

Possibly. It could mean that.
It could also mean a million other things.

What is the number of files you are trying to tar ?
What is the total size of the files you are trying to tar ?
Any other info. you could provide ?

Things to do :

Check your file size limit designated to users.
Check your file system size, using df. Is there enough space to hold the tar file ? Not having enough space to write the tar will terminate the command abnormally.
Your tape (if you are writing directly to tape, that is) could have reached the end ?

2.ls -la <tarfile>

I had this problem too. It was a limitation
on file sizes.

Logon as root.
Go to /etc/security
look at the file called limits
under defaults, locate fsize.
If it's not -1, change it to -1.
This will allow unlimited file sizes.

It worked for me, thanks to my bud Eugene at IDS.
