Good afternoon, I am having problems extracting this file.I am using the following command # tar -xvf openssl-0.9.7d.tar. I then get the following message...........
tar: 0511-169 A directory checksum error on media; 804399536 not equal

I think what hfaix means is that tar files should be transferred as binary, not ascii.

Sorry, I think I'm wrong. I was thinking of compressed or gzipped files. tar files should be transferred using ascii as hfaix suggests.

Well, it is Saturday!!

No Ken,

A tar file as well as gzip or zip filoe should always be ftpd in binary.

HTH,

Interesting. Now I'm back in the office I've tried ascii and binary transfer with tar files and both appear to work.

Ken,

ftp from what platform to what platform?

unix to unix ascii or binary ftp is the same (LF stays LF) although I guess binary transfers are faster.

win to/from unix makes a difference. (LF to CRLF or CRLF to LF conversion)

HTH,

p5wizard

p5wizard, I think you're correct. My test was AIX to AIX box, but I have encountered problems with Windows to Unix boxes in the past.

yeah..... my question was a suggestion. My bad.

I was asking if it was ftp'd in binary, kind of assuming he/she did, but I wanted to make sure. That was an unclear post.

I always ftp in binary.
