I'm not sure if I have a tapedrive or software problem. Whenever we run a local backup, we get about 10GB on the tape and then BackupExec spans tapes prematurely. The app also spits out this error:

TapeAlert!
WARNING: The tape drive is having problems writing data.
No data has been lost, but there has been a reduction
in the capacity of the tape.

Environment:

Compaq Proliant ML350
Compaq 40/80 DLT Drive
Novell NetWare 5.1 w/SP3
Backup Exec 8.5 Rev.4106

Any suggestions?

This is a remote server in an office with no technical staff.

I have just got the same set of errors.
Believe it could be new tape quality.

Have you tried new tapes?

Have you cleaned the tape drive(s)?

Found document doesn't tell me much apart from the obvious.

Brand new tapes on last weeks backups. Clean once a week.
Brand new tapes on this weeks backup will monitor. Look ok so far, so that's why think it's tape quality (even on brand new last week). Other forums seem to be having problems intermittent with DLT8000's. Can not work then work later.
