Tape rewinds

I have a curious ? that a customer wanted to know about. Why in the middle of the day and the server is idle does the tape rewind (not sure it is rewinding but it is doing something). They have a Seagate Drive with 8gb tapes. No backup software is running during this.

Is this normal?

Check to make sure you don't have any programs that use the tape. Do you have a database system that may access the tape? Do you have a tape diagnostic program running in the background that may test for current tape conditions? Good Luck!
