Tape problem

Hardware question:

I have a tape that is stuck in the drive (4mm) on Sun Sparc 20 with Solaris 7.
The light keeps flashing and the tape doesnt want to come out even after turning the tape hardware device on and off. Anybody have any suggestions on how to get this tape out?? Can I disconnect it and put in another tape drive without rebooting the system??

Having had this problem previously, I'm afaid the only rather drastic solution was to reboot the box. Are you getting any error messages when trying to do an mt -f <device> rewoff command?

We had this & had to call in an engineer to swap the drive (fortunately, we had a maintenance contract ) TandA

Message error: /dev/rmt/0: No tape loaded or drive offline

I tried a reboot and the tape still wont come out.

Any other ideas??

Suspect that you'll have to take the machine down to remove the drive. Your drive may be broken, or the tape may have jammed in the drive.
Don't suggest replacing with power up. Too many ways you can get feedback into the system to break something else.
You might also look into getting a replacement tape, then have the old one fixed as a spare. Ed Fair

Make sure the tape is unmounted, bdf will tell you. If it is unmounted them you may have to bring down the server to get the tape from the drive
