tape driver on Solaris 8

after upgrading the operation system on UltraSparc from Solaris7 64bit to Solaris8 , the tapes connected to the machine had a wired problem:
the machine see`s them , even does a rew/stat,
BUT what it tries to write to it fails with an I/O error .
** tried the same thing on a Solaris8 that was installed from scrach.

what can it be?

What is the tape drive model? Is your drive listed in the
/kernel/drv/st.conf file?

well , yes.
since i upgraded the system the st.conf file hasn`t change.
