tape drive problem.

I have a RS6000 with AIX 4.3 loaded on it, i am getting a message on the lcd on the 8mm tape drive that says, error 1, error 2, error 3, 0B,00,00. If anyone knows what this is or how to reset it please let me know, It has a tape stuck in the tape drive. I kinda figured the tape drive is fried but i would like to know what happened.

Apart from the obvious problem tape stuck in the drive)
are there any errors in error report ( errpt -a | m )
with these 8mm tape drives , they are very particular regarding the tapes that are used for the backups , are the correct ones used ?

When you get err 1,2,0r 3 and some values , on the LCD it is definitely a hardware problem ? The codes after ERR 1 are the fault symptom codes. If you have support for the drive contact the vendor and quote the symptom codes , or search for the service manula for the tape drive and see if the symptom codes are listed.
