All of a sudden I was getting many errors from BE about media problems (redundancy error, error reading, etc) so I used the StorageWorks utility for testing and showing fine except the drive can't recognize media in the drive.

I'm using a HP MSL6000 Series & the drive is a HP Ultirum 3-SCSI. The front panel of the MSL shows 'Med. Err.' for that specific drive. I've tried multiple tapes and doubt they've all gone bad (tried new/used). Any other suggestions before calling HP and trying to get a new one?

When putting a tape into the drive, it will show 'Threading' on the screen, then proceed to say 'Med. Err.' --> Media Error but no drive errors. I have now tried many tapes and cleaned the drive with no luck. HP's support doesn't know anything else either (you would think they would know cause they build the thing).

Gotta love $10k spent on that kinda thing...

Power cycle the drive. In theory you also need to then restart the server as you've destabilised the chain but hey, I won't tell if you won't. Test again in case it is a chain issue.

Then get HP to replace the drive.
