I am adding an additional tape drive on our Sun. For the system to recognise it, should I shutdown -S, then reboot -R ? will the system them see the additional device?

From the OK prompt, use boot -r

An alternative way is to place an empty file called reconfigure in the root directory and then bounce the box. Good luck.

Sorry - meant to add, use:

shutdown -i0 -g0 -y

to shutdown to OK prompt,or:

shutdown -i6 -g0 -y

to shutdown and reboot.
