I am new to using tape backups but am having a problem.

I try to do a backup of the entire server where the tape drive is hooked up. I know it has worked in the past.

Backup destination = dlt
Backup Media = new media

I get the error: "there is no unused media available with the selected type"

i've gone through the media management in computer management and tried to delete everything. what am I missing?

I am running windows 2000 server and a quantum dlt vs160

First, check if your tape is recognised at all (Removable Storage -> Physical Locations -> Your tape drive -> Media). If not, restart Removable Storage service and check again.
Check media pool and media state of tape. Normally it should be in Free media pool with state 'Idle, Available'. If not, right-click tape name and choose Prepare. It will move tape to Free pool and change state to Available. Then try to do backup.

the tape drive didn't show up in physical locations.

I unplugged the scsi cable from the server, rebooted the server, plugged the scsi cable back in after the server was up, and then rebooted the server again.

Then I finished following your instructions and it worked perfectly. Thank you!
