My company has a customer who seems to be having problems with there tape backup. They backup using a SQL Query that backs up to '\\.\Tape0'. When looking into the contents of the tape, various backup sets were there but only the time was showing not the date.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? As far as I know in my limited experience there should also be a date. I did a test overwrite data backup from Enterprise Manager and this did the same.

They are using MSDE2000 Service Pack 1.

Any help greatly appreciated.

First, MSDE2000 is up to SP3 already. They really need to apply that service pack as it protects against the SQL worms.

Second, can you provide the backup command they are using?

SQLBill,

Thanks for replying. It would be a good idea to upgrade to SP3.

The backup command is

BACKUP DATABASE [SMB] TO TAPE = N'\\.\Tape0' WITH INIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'SMB backup', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT .

Thanks again

Andy

How are you 'looking into the contents of the tape'?

Everything I see in BOL shows that the information should be datetime. So maybe there is a CONVERT happening.

I was experiencing the same symptons on my machine and decided to re-install SQL Server.

This seems to have worked and I think I will install SP3 on the customers machine to solve the problem.

Thanks very much for your help and time.

Have a star
