I'm not a Solaris "expert", but you might try this:
Shutdown the server.
Physically connect tape drive (make sure it's terminated and scsi id is set)
boot the box to single user mode
run the command probe-scsi-all from the ok prompt (get there by pressing stop-a)
you should see all of your drives - including the new tape drive
type boot -r
that should do it.
