Hello everyone,

I am trying to get a tape drive activated across the SAN but I am wondering if there is a limit on how many tape devices AIX can have. We had added two drives to a L40 tape unit, I was able to get one of the two activated but when I try the last one I get a scsi adapter error, but our Windows servers are using it. Can anyone give me an idea of what is going on? When I run the lsdev it shows a path rmt14 that is available and shows the location address but I can't get it to work...

Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

Do you have the fcp.tape.rte installed?

There is no limit on the number of tape devices AIX can have. I have 20 of them installed on my AIX 4.3.3 and AIX 5.1 servers.

What HBA are you using for the SAN attachment?

With the L40, there is a certain way that you have to daisy chain the drives. Please refer to the user manual for better clarification.

I have the fcp.tape.rte installed. I am able to get to one of the two new drives, just the second one is not working like it should.

I am using Emulex LP9002 HBAs for the SAN connection.

The L40 was set up by Unysis and I would assume that they know what they are doing.

I would not assume from what you are experiencing. There is an certain order that the drives on an L40 must be daisy chained along with the robot itself.

I also had problems with daisy chained in LTO libraries.
Worth checking.
