I am using a hp storageworks 72 device to take my backups with backup exec 10. Now, the capacity of my tapes is 72 Gigabyte, although the backup job asks to insert a new tape after about 58 Gigabyte backed up. Is that 72 Gigabyte only a theoretical amount of data which can be stored on tape (36 Gigabyte with an assumed compression ratio of 2)? And if so, can I increase that compression ratio? I am now using hardware compression.

That is correct. Anything over 36 Gb on your tape is gravy. Hardware compression usually yields the best results.

Yep that is about right...then general rule of thumb on hardware compression is half the difference. All depending on what types of files your backing up. If they are already compressed (Images, PST files, Database files) then the hardware is not going to compress them any further.
