Hi all we are installing SCCS 4.0 on windows 2000 and we're wondering a few things about using a tape backup. Our vendor wants us to backup to a shared drive but we don't have that option at this time. I am looking for suggestions on backing up to a local tape drive both online and offline backups and any problems that have been encountered.

Thanks

The recommendation from the vendor is to do the network backup, though tape should not be an issue.

The network backup will be more desirable as you won't have to deal with tapes specifically for the symposium itself.

What type of server are you building?

Of course network backups would be easier but our company doesn't do them at this time. All servers are backed up by tape.

The server is a Dell 2600.

What I was asking is we were told we will have to schedule downtime to do the complete backup of the symposium by tape.I was looking for any problems that may have been encountered by doing it this way.

Whether you use tape or network backup you'll have to need to have a period of time where there's no activity on the server. Depending on the size of your database, it will take between 30mins to an hour to do a tape backup. When doing the Symposium 5.0 install, it asks you for the backup in an early part of the process. It gives you the option for either tape or network file, so either way it shouldn't be a problem.
