Tape Backup in VMWare ESX 2.5x

Greetings, I have a VMWare ESX Server Running on a Compaq DL360 with 2gigs of Ram and dual 1ghz processors. i have connected a Sony Storstation to the server with a Rhino Jr External Enclosure. The Tape Drive shows up at boot as SCSI port 1 ID 5. This would indicate to me that the server has seen the new hardware. when i go into the Service console to add the new device to a guest operating system, The virtual machine tells me that no device has been found, When i try to manually install it to a guest OS the OS Fails to boot and states that the hardware is not preset.
