tape backup device file permissions

I've got a HP-UX 11.11 server with 2 tape backup drives hosting Sybase dbs. The server uses NetBackup DC to backup the server and an NT client to one tape backup drive. The DBA has setup Sybase hourly backups (using Sybase not NetBackup) to the other tape backup drive.

The problem is that the permissions of the device file (c0t3doBESTnb) for the 2nd tape drive keeps reverting to CRW- --- --- from what we need it to stay at which would be CRW- RW- RW-. The only thing that make any sense is that when Netbackup accesses the device file it restores the permissions which in turn prevents Sybase from accessing the drive.

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this ?

Hi

I have the same situation(2 drives,Sybase backups, etc) and the same problem. I realized that NetBAckup was indeed the culprit as far as changing the perms back. Wat was happening was that whenever the Media Manager daemon was stoppped/restarted or reset it would change the perms back.

My solution was to simply remove the tape drive used by Sybase from NetBAckup's control. I've got one drive accessed/controlled by NetBackup doing regular backups and the other is the one being directly accessed by Sybase dumps.

Probably not the best solution but it seems to work for now. Please let me know if you find anything better.
