Hi Guys
Given the following info - can you help me, please

/data/Y2K/build is a directory on a remote machine, which I have just mounted
onto my RS6000 (with help from Tek-Tips gurus )

dbird on mickey: /data > ls -lrt

The problem is that the daily tar backup to tape is filling the tape.
Directory data has to be backed up - but how can I exclude just /data/Y2K/build
from the backup ? It's big ! ( and is allready backed up on the remote machine )
Can I just umount /data/Y2K/build , run my backup , then mount it afterwards ?
TIA ;-) Dickie Bird

I suppose you could unmount then mount but obviously no processes on your system or users on your system could use the resources on the remote drive whilst the backup is underway.

The question is - how do you actually perform the backup, presumably this could be tailored in some way to omit the directory. More information on your backup processes would assist.

Cheers

Thanks Newmangi
We do a monthly mksysb of all except the data directories.
We run a daily tar backup (to tape) during which, no users are allowed on the system ( we disable their logins)
Trying the umount and mount before and after the backup was successful.
Thanks for your time.

alternatively
contruct a list using 'df', pass the list to backup prog.
assuming your 'df'command is able to print local-fs only (on solaris: df -Fufs will do this)
if not: df|grep /dev/
