Hi,

We're trying to get Transformer installed on our HPUX boxes, but it just wont work.

We eventually downloaded 7.0MR2 from the Cognos site (as the CD's wouldnt work!) and got it all installed.

I am trying to run ./rsserver.sh (which executes 'rsserve -w') from the command line, but this exists with an error:
[highlight #FF99FF]
Cannot activate PowerGrid. Reason 42: COMM-E-M_CONERR, Connection failed
[/highlight]
... a transcript of the sessions is as follows:
/sware/cognos/cer2/bin $> ./rsserver.sh

... The aim is to get it running as a daemon so we can connect from the PC clinet (for Unix).

Any suggestions of things to try would be great. Cognos support seem to be a bit stuck with this. I'm getting the distinct impression, they couldnt be stuffed with Unix.

Thanks Draoued,

I'm not actually trying to produce a cube. I'm trying to start Transformer as a service. So it will continue running, bound to port 1512 (or whatever) waiting for the Transformer for Unix Client(on Windows) to connect.

Thanks for looking up the article tho ...

PowerGrid is a Daemon , so it s listening all the time on the port 1512. There is nothing to do to have it up.

Without starting your rsserver -w in Unix , what happen if you test the connection from your windows Client to Unix ??
In Transformer for Unix, Menu SERVER , Test Connection

Hi Draoued,

A quick correction, the powergrid port is actually 1526 (checked on both ends).

I'm not sure what you mean by powergrid is a daemon ?!? The install has added a line to my /etc/services file like so:
[red]powergrid 1526/tcp[/red]
... this simply labels the port doesnt it ?

When I try to connect from my PC I get the following:
[blue]Network: WinSock 2.0
The current address is '[IP=172.20.3.135]'

---- Test '1' ----
Remote request has failed. Reason: 42: COMM-E-M_CONERR, Connection failed
[/blue]
.... this was trying to goto 172.20.5.140:1526 - VWAHOST4, when I try to simply connect to that port on the server from my workstation (using telnet I get the following:
[blue]
Microsoft Telnet> open vwahost4:1526
Connecting To vwahost4:1526...Could not open a connection to host: Connect failed
[/blue]
.... to me, this suggests theres nothing bound to, or process been spawned to handle requests coming in to this port.

Any other hits or suggestions would be appreciated.

try going to the bon folder , start ./configure , then send the command "start". This should return that configuration is properly started , and that powergrid is now running.
If there is something wrong in your installation or with some parameters they will be listed , and a file will be created ( the file name and location is given at the same time)

Thankyou Draoued!

This is most helpful! running start produced the following:
[blue]

... I dont actually want to run another directory server, We already have a few running here, so I will try and configure it to use our e-directory.

The command-line configurator certinaly takes some getting used to after only using the GUI tool! :)

In the ./configure
send the command : wizard
This will start a wizard which will give you the parameters only for Access Manager and the possibility to change them.

After changing them , send the command : apply , if success then start.

Thanks Draoued,

Your better than Cognos Support on this one! Our infrastructure team have not been forthcoming with details about our LDAP directory, so instead I've made up an LAE file on my PC, transfered it to Unix and confiured it using that.

The test from my PC -> Unix now completes successfully!

... however I tried to syncronise with the server, and it returns "Transformer couldnt start the remote server task" ?! .... So, one step at a time I'm determined to get this working. I've checked the service is running as root and everything, but still no go .... I'm not sure if there are any good log files on the server to exlpain where it's getting stuck, but I'll keep looking around.

Many Thanks for your help Draoued! If you were in Melbourne(Australia) I'd buy you a drink!

check the Unix Group of the Cognos files.
I think you that you need to belong to the same group as Cognos files.
How did you push your pyi files to the server ??
