TAM B or WMT1A for paging

We recently took out an old Magix system, yes you heard right! LOL.

Install a new IP Office. I did not order a WMT1A adapter for paging, as they had a current setup of a TAM B with a Bogen amp. It is not working, so I am thinking maybe the Bogen Tam B does not give the same type of 600 ohm setup that a WMT1A does???

We don't use the WMT1A anymore unless we are attaching to a aux input of an amp. It is a 600-15k ohm transformer. We use Valcom VTM2 which is a pure 600-600. The TAMB will work just fine. How are you trying to connect it? I am assuming as a trunk. If you want to use it as a page port you just need the transformer.

So I wanted to add to this.. paging seems to be very frustrating on IP Office, maybe because we just don't have a big demand for it. It does not seem to work or adapt as easily as on the older Magix and Legends.

I admit, I just don't do enough paging to be an expert, so I need your help.

Original equipement was a Magix system going into a Bogen TamB. From the TamB it went out to the Bogen amp with T/R and contact closure, presumably to kill the music when paging. We went into the TamB with both a station port and trunk port, but nothing comes out the paging. When we went into it with a station port, we tried it both with a WMTA1 and without.

then I went directly into the Bogen from a station port. Ironically this is the exact same setup as their other office. We did have to adjust the speaker volume at Site A. I put my toner on the T/R of the Bogen amp and I can barely hear an audible signal that way. Its like the speaker volumes are way down, but prior it had no problems with volume from the Magix system.

I need to be able to interupt the music when paging, but I also need to be able to use a station port so I can do paging from both site A and Site B on the SCN.

Anyway, and help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Both systems are R11.0.0.2 by the way. I know their are higher releases, but I try to hold off the latest release.

Paging on a Magix is only done through a loop start trunk port, so if you want to just unplug from the Magix and plug into the IP Office, you're going to have to use an ATM port. Your short code will be
*89 / Dial / {Blank} / {the unique outgoing line group for the ATM line}
Paging via an ATM trunk port will NOT allow simultaneous paging, through the telephone speakers at the same time as loudspeakers. If you only need Loudspeaker paging, it works fine.

If you want to interface paging through an analogue station port, programmed as a paging port, you must load the IP Office station port with a 600 Ω impedance, and isolate the IPO's battery voltage from the input of the paging equipment. This is done with a matching transformer, such as the Valcom VTM2 referenced above, or my go to, Viking Electronics AIB-1. This will give you a nice 600 Ω signal to the paging input of the amplifier. Bypass the TAM-B or UPAM, as they are not compatible with a dry loop paging signal.

If the amplifier doesn't mute music automatically via a VOX circuit on the paging input, and requires a contact closure during paging, add a Bogen UTI-1 paging interface to the mix. You still need the matching transformer, its output goes to the dry-loop paging port input on the UTI, with it set to VOX, so that when audio is present it will trigger a relay contact. This can then be wired to the Music Mute contacts on the amplifier, OR, the music source can be input into the UTI as well, and connect from the "Page & Music" terminals of the UTI to the paging input of the amplifier.

The advantage of using an analogue station port programmed as a paging port, you can include the paging port extension in a paging group and do simultaneous paging.

Just for clarity. I assume this is the original TAMB with 66 type connections not the phoenix connectors. I am also assuming the amp is a TPU. If you want to use a station port you will need to set the analog station to an IVR port for proper disconnect. Remove the power supply, that is only used on trunk port applications. Everything else should be the same.

TAMB does have 66 type connections. The AMP is a Bogen 100 watt amp. So to be clear, I could use the TAMB connection if I make the analog station port an IVR port instead of loudspeaker port?

Yes. But make sure you remove the power supply. That is used to provide talk battery for trunk applications.

Guys thank you for all your input and help. We managed to get it connected properly. I really appreciate the feedback.

One issue that is now dogging me is how people from Site A can page over the loudspeakers at site B and vice versa. I built a paging group and added the extension of the paging port. works locally, but does not seem to work across the SCN. The can page across the phones either way. Is their something else I am missing here? thx

Only analog extensions programmed as a page port can be added to a page group.

Yes I have added the analog extensions programmed as page ports to groups. They seem to work locally, but not across SCN, which doesnt make sense. You should be able to page that group across the SCN. It even sounds like its trying to page but getting nothing across. I am going to troubleshoot more later and try to provide more information.

I would build a short code to page just that port and watch monitor on both sides that might show you were the failure is.

just an update... maybe I was too tired last night and just wasn't mentally sharp. Came in this morning, programmed the dial paging button and pointed to the other switch, and works like a charm. So anyone who wants to setup loudspeaker paging across SCN, just program a button on System A, and use the dial paging feature, and the paging port of Switch B, and it will work just fine.
