It seems the more i find the more questions i have. What is the "talk" program all about. What is the sintax of the command? Can it be run from DOS? Do I need to telnet into a server? help please!

talk is a peer-to-peer protocol, so there is no need to contact a server for the connection. It performs the same function as Instant Messenger, but because it is strictly peer-to-peer, you don't get a notification when someone else comes onto the net. Like a telephone, you have to attempt to contact them first.

Most implementations are command line, but I believe that there are many windowed versions available now.

The early versions were not network based, and only allowed you to &quot;talk&quot; to another user on the same system. The syntax was 'talk person <ttyname>' and connected you to the user named 'person' and optionally to a specific tty that they may be using.
