I have a box running RedHat 7.3. I kow that there is a talk function, an internal chat thing...in Debian it's ytalk (don't know what version). But when I try to talk tto others in my box, I get

Error on talk daemon:Connection refused. Press any key...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Hope I was of some help...

you probably need talkd installed too.

cat /etc/inetd.conf |grep talk - to see if you have it.

hello,

The box apparently doesn't know what inetd.conf is.I can't even do a whereis on it. I am new to Linux, and I've used talk (actually ytalk on a Debian shell account, but that was because the root is a bud of mine and he was promting me to get it going, noetheless, I have a RedHat 7.3 box, and I am lost).

What does "grep" mean, anyway? (If there is a relation to any Windows commands, that would help).

I have all 8 pretty, boxed CD's...including the source CD's, Star Office, and another disk...I think it's Aplications, or something like that.

Anyway, the BASH spits out "inetd:" after entering cat/etc...

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help, I am really hung on this one.;-)

Cadwalader,

You may want to check for the existence of /etc/xinetd.conf (vs. inetd.conf).

If this file exists, check out the contents of the includedir value (e.g. "includedir /etc/xinetd.d") in this file. Take a look at the files in the specified directory.

Another approach is to run "rpm -q -a | grep talk" to see what's what. Check out "man rpm" if needed.

Just some suggestions.

Wow,

Biker, it's there, and this is what it looks like.

#
# Simple configuration file for xinetd
#
# Some defaults, and include /etc/xinetd.d/

defaults
{
instances = 60
log_type = SYSLOG authpriv
log_on_success = HOST PID
log_on_failure = HOST
cps = 25 30
}

includedir /etc/xinetd.d

but it's still not werkin. I get the talk screen, and in the line in the middle, it says

"Error on read from talk daemon: Connection refused: Press any key..."

I am lost. It would be nice to talk to the other user(s) on my box. Any help would be greatly be appreciated. :)

Hope I was of some help...
