Oracle Newbie!: I recently installed Oracle8iEE on a Solaris system. Using the Server Manager I attempted to start the database, and received the error "ORA-1102 cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode."

How is the database being set to EXCLUSIVE mode? And more importantly how do I get it out?

Based on the error message you are getting it seems that somehow another instance managed to mount your database in exclusive mode. The solution would be to shutdown the other instance. Do you have multiple instances on your server? Perhaps you accidentally tried to mount both using the same init.ora file.
