Taking CCNA for the first (correction ONLY) time tommorow and am wondering something:

I am assuming there will be configuration problems where you have to type syntax. Will short cut commands work or will I get the problem wrong even though its really right?

ie..
copy run start
sh run
conf t

etc.

I am so used to doing this that I fear I may miss some easy ones. What else should I expect?

The best practice is to use the full command. But the simulations in the exam accept the short cuts, nobody really knows how they are marked, what I tend to do is write it in short but use the tab button. The tab button completed the full work
eg
show int [tab]
show interface _

catch my meaning?

If you get any fill in the blank box type questions I think you should enter the full command!

Good luck

Thanks. Also, after entering commands for configuration they take effect as soon as you hit enter but does it make a difference if you exit or ^Z then copy run start after your configs? Can you do a sh run after your config to make sure you did what you wanted to do? How leinent is the test about extra commands as long as you accomplish your goal?

pirateclem,

The sim works just like a real router - it does not grade anything until you are done and submit the question to go on to the next question.

You can do a show run, copy run start etc.

In talking to Cisco CCNA exam design team members at Networkers several years ago - the sim question is looking for several specific commands in the log of all you did - does not care about extra stuff was done as long as what ever steps it has been told to look for are there!

Hope this helps and good luck!

Passed with a 922. However, to anyone else taking the test, for the lab type portions: the tab to complete is disabled throught the test and help '?' is either disabled or very limited through the test. Know those commands!

Well done pirate. Throw all the letters in the bag...CCNP next?

Hope this Helps.

so your saying the ? is now disabled? any test I have taken the tab and ? command have both been functional

All the ones i have taken recently have ? and TAB working as well, very puzzling.

MCP,CCA,CCNA, Net+, Half CCNP...

Tab to complete was not functional on my test at any point. The sidebar even continually stated that tab to complete was not functional. Additionally, the help '?' was marginally functional and did not list all items on most questions. On some problems it was not functional at all. Again, this was stated in the sidebar for each of the lab type problems. I reiterate...know those commands.

ncotton: Yeah, I am probably going to move on to the CCNP but would like to finish my MCSE first. The CCNA is something I have put off, actually it was easier than I expected, probably put it off far too long. My company has been purchased and the new owners wanted to see that I was cisco certified. Pretty silly really, I have been running the network fine for awhile. Guess its just a new HR department. Wont hurt my resume I guess. ;-)
