Take data from TextInput box and hold it in a variable X 1

Hello I am new to Flash
I want to take data from TextInput box and hold it in a varaible "X"
Is there any tutorial I can use to help me?
Or someone help me by directing me in the right direction?

The code has been tried with a text box but how do I check if it works i.e
where is trace?
