Hello,

How can I view the contents of a log file as it is written to without effecting it (locking it etc.)?

I am basically looking for something to emulate the UNIX tail -f functionality with a tool or technique that is native to Windows 2003.

Thanks,

TekDude

Google for tail.exe. It's been released as a Windows executable by a couple of people. Drop it in c:\windows\system32 so that it's in the PATH and you can use it from anywhere.

Tail.exe is included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools amongst a plethora of other useful tools.

Also, take a look at "logview4net". A very useful and free log viewing utility. You can run it from your local Windows XP machine and view log files in real time from your servers. You can really fool around with it and tweak it to highlight certain text strings in your log files, so you don't have to search hard for what your looking for in the logs. We have been using this, at my company, to tail various log files lately and are very impressed with it. It is a little buggy sometimes, but still a good free utility nonetheless.
