I want a simple thing really; I have my marker at a specific location at which I would like to add a tab for the lines that will come below. But how? I can't seem to find the distance to the marker from the left edge, and if I just press the ruler to add one it won't be accurate enough.

That isn't how it works. You have to select the paragraphs and then add the marker to the ruler.

Try this: either type the text and select it or select the paragraph markers (non-printing characters need to be turned on), and then choose Format | Tabs. You can enter an exact setting there by typing a number in the tab stop position box.

By default, tabs will align themseleves to a hidden grid (set in the drawing layer). You can override this by holding the ALT key as you move the tab on the ruler.

(Note that this works for making fine adjustments to anything in the drawing layer such as text boxes, shapes, WordArt, etc.)

If I understand what you are doing Tabs is not the best way. I suggest you define a style and set the indent (format/paragraph) for that style to the exact spacing you want. With this method once you tag the paragraph with the new style you can continue typing and the lines will wrap to the new indent, or if you want to start a new line use alt enter.
Be sure and set you “Style for following paragraph” to be your “Normal” or “body text”style.
This also would allow to consistently repeat this formatting at other locations in the document.
