Table spaces are the logical layers between the databse and the tables stored in that database. Table spaces are created within a database, and tables are created within table spaces. DB2 supports 2 kinds of table spaces

System managed space(SMS) - The operating systems file manager allocates and manages the space where the table is to be stored. An SMS table space is the default table space.

Database managed space(DMS) The database manager controls the storage space. This table space is essentially an implementation of a special purpose file system designed to meet the needs of the database manager,

When a table is being defined using the Create Table statement, you can explicitly state in which table space the table data will reside. Table spaces provide the DBA with the ability to control the location of the database objects. You can define any number of tablespaces within a single database.
