i have a backup of a Great Plains DB and i restored it to my SQL server, i do not need to use great plains but i need to extract sales data from the DB. the tables are not named in a manner that makes sense, does anyone have a link to some docs explain what tables contain what data.

It really depends on how much details you need. Here are the main ones:

RM_OPEN (RM20101) - Posted Sales
RM_HISTORY (RM30101) - Fully paid Sales

SOP_HDR_HIST (SOP30200) - Posted SOP transactions
SOP_LINE_HIST (SOP30300) - Posted SOP transaction lines

If you need distributions, tax, commissions, serial/lot numners, comments, user defined fields etc. these are in other tables.

PS: There is a naming convention which does give hints to what table is what.
