Tableless Layouts: Having problems scaling height/width. Help me PLEAS

First of all, thanks for clicking!!

What i'm trying to do is replicate the layout found at PositionIsEverything (see link below) but with a scalable tableless interface (i.e. width:100%)

I've found a number of resources online, but have yet been unable to bring it all together. The problems I'm having at the moment are:

1. I cannot stretch the columns (i.e if one column is longer than the others, the rest should stretch accordingly)

2. I'm having a great deal of trouble placing the footer correctly on the page. Also in IE the content of the footer is not appearing centred?!?

I have also attempted to modify Cleva Treva's generated source, but have had difficulties setting the width to 100%

Any help/advice/tips/resources/tricks/code/whatever would be absolutely amazing. I feel like i'm going crazy!!!

This tutorial teaches us 3-column layout step by step. i think it is worth to take a look.
