Table width ignored in Netsape 1

I have a page that has several tables on it, all with a explicit width of 640. In IE all of the tables display the same width. In Netscape one of the tables keeps coming out wider that all the rest. I have checked the HTML using CSE HTMLL Validator Pro version 4.5 and there are no errors in the code.

Any ideas why netscape would ignore the width attribute on one table but not the others? chrisquick@aol.com

I have not read the code exactly, but maybe your images which you put in a cell are too great. Use width also for your images en use <BR> tags for the next sentence.
You can also try to make 1 extra row in the top of te table
where you put the next code: <TD colspan=x><IMG src=&quot;image.gif&quot; width=&quot;640&quot;></TD>,
Image.gif must be a one pixel image.
x must be as great as the number of collumns you table have.
Try it is an old dreamweaver/fireworks trick. Maybe it solve the problem.

Netscape does some weird stuff. Particularly with inconsistencies in table display compared to the definition. First, be sure all of your widths add up, as suggested before. The one-pixel gif trick is good too, but probably won't shrink a table that is too big, but usually works to grow a table that is too small. Make sure that you don't have anything which is larger than the cell it occupies, or the cell will grow. Since it works in IE, I doubt this is the case.

Also, remember that a newline is a space in html so this:

<table>
<tr>
<td>
<content>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

is not the same thing as this:

<table><tr><td><content></td></tr></td>

However, the following is the same as this:

<table>
<tr>
<td
><content
></td>
</tr>
</table>

Since the newlines inside the tags are ignored, however newlines between tags are rendered as spaces.

One other thing which has actually worked for me in the past(which seems strange, but its worth a try) is to delete some of your size definitions where they aren't necessary, eg, change this:

<table width=&quot;640&quot; height=&quot;480&quot;>
<tr width=&quot;640&quot; height=&quot;480&quot;>

to this:

It sometimes falls into place more easily, I guess because there may have been some sort of logic error in the table rendering routine which is bypassed by reducing the number of variables it deals with. Try taking out specified widths and heights wherever they are not critically needed.

The only other suggestion is to rearrange the way your tables are laid out and see if NS likes the new layout better.

Might seem silly, but have you tried swapping the order of the tables? This may isolate whether this is a problem of multiple tables or a problem with a particular table (I have encountered a similar problem concerning page links). hmmm interesting.

if you fill the empty table cells with a transparent gif it will fix the problem in netscape. I use a 1x1 transparent gif and resize it to fit the cell. Hope this helps

velocity, that won't shrink a cell that is artificially inflated. It will only expand a cell that is artificially deflated. The question states that one of the cells is too big, not too small.

Oddly enough I had the same problem and a friend suggested cutting up a ruler and putting appropriately sized bits into each cell as a diagnostic tool, so you could see which bits were wider than they should be.

It solved it.

so I did that one pixel trick and resized them and now it looks great in Netscape.
