Table of Contents for aHuge Word Document

Could anyone tell me how to make table of contents for a huge word document using some techniques? This really gives me a lot of hard time because I made it manually, and every time when we make change to the document, I have to shift all the page numbers.

Use Headings for your titles/headers, and on the top of your document insert a field TOC
This will give you something like

1. Index .................... 2
2. Contents ................. 3
2.1 Document purpose ........ 3
2.2 Document signataires .... 3



This way you just need to update the TOC.

Thank you, Frank. I know that Word has index/table of contents. I am just having hard time in formatting the headings. I need to format the headings before I use index/table of contents, do I?

Don't worry about the name.

As Skip mentioned you need to apply a style to a particular line.

So if you have your text like this (before styles)

Contents
Document purpose
The purpose of this document is...

You would apply the "heading 1"
to the line with "contents"
and "heading 2" to the one with "document purpose".


I normally change the headings formatting to use a number so that I don't have to number the documents myself.

So after applying the headings the above would look like

1. Contents
1.1. Document purpose
the purpose of this document is
