table limit/variables limit in SQL Server

Hi to SQL Server Experts.

Visiting to ask a fundamental question regarding table field limits. (. . .will show you how much I know!)
Only self taught in VFP7. . .and have run into table number of fields limit and variables limits.

number of fields limit in a vfp table is 255 fields . . .
Variables limit in vfp is 65,000. . .

. . .number of tables is getting out control.
How many fields can a sql table have?
( all my tables are one to one joined and fields are pushing 4000, 1 record for one client)
. . .thinking maybe I shd graduate to something "bigger" .dbc and continue using vfp as front end.

Any feedback would be deeply appreicated.
