Is there any way to resize the columns of a table to fit the text? For example, in Microsoft Excel, if you double-click on the top edge of a column, it will shrink the width of the column to the width of the widest cell in that column. Is this possible in InDesign 2?

No, there is no automatic function for doing that. You have to eyeball it.
