I have a table with about 600K records in it. When I open the table, it takes a long time and the query status bar shows up at the bottom of the screen as if I were running an action query. Why is this happening and what can I do to make it faster.

I am running Access 2003 and I have compacted and repaired the database already.

Thanks

It is likely that manyy tables with 600K rows will open slowly since Access is in effect creating a view where you can navigate to any record in the table - it takes time to do this.
You didn't mention how "wide" a record is as this also will have an impact.

My suggestion would be that you try not to open this table but instead open one of several queries, each of which give with a specific slice of the table or prompt you for criteria on an indexed field.

I agree with Steve. Why would you ever need to open a form or datasheet view of 600,000 records or even 1,000 records?
