I am trying to append an ASCII tab delimited file into my dBase IV file. I typed the following syntax from the dot prompt: "append from example.txt type delimited with 9" but the data would not append correctly. When I tried "modi struc", selected "append" from the menu, then "copy from non-dBase file", then selected character delimited and picked 9 (for Tab), I got a "syntax error" message. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once I had a similar problem - how to export dB file to txt file to have fields delimited with tabs. The only way was to add single-character columns (after each "regular" column) filled with chr(9) and export the file (copy sdf type). Maybe my story will help you in a way.

I'm not familar with DB4 so excuse my ignorance.

When you used the "assistant" and selected "Character Delimited" and selected "9", did it actually say (tab) or just "9"? There is a difference between &h09 ("tab") and &h39 ("9").

When I import dbf files to Excel, it will ask what the delimiter is and there is "TAB" and "9" indicated.

Otherwise, I do not have anything to suggest that may help.
