Tab Control Image Display Color Depth

Is anyone aware of why the tab controls .BMP and .ICO display is limited to 16 colors, but similar things like command buttons seem to be able to display 256 color images? It's not that big of a deal to me, but if there is a way around this, or news that later versions may include allowing higher res images, I'd be interested in knowing.

If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it...no big thing though, I'll be OK using 16 color images.
