I'm having the same issue that others have had when trying to wire multiple handsets with the T7406e base (if I plug the end for either handset 2 or handset 3 into the station port, I get one green and one amber light on the T7406e base station). I was wondering if it could be crosstalk between the twisted pairs that is causing this? Maybe both ends of the cat-5 cable need to have matching twisted pairs to get it working properly?

True. I'm starting out with a 568A cable, so on the end with the RJ-45, I have (from left to right) white/grn, green, white/org, blue, white/blue, org, white/brn, brn. The other end I have split into 4 pairs: white/grn, grn for handset 1, white/org, blue for #2, white/blue, org for #3, and white/brn, brn for #4. Would it be better, instead, to wire both ends of the cable with matching twisted pairs like in the diagram (white/blu, blue, white/org, org, white/grn, grn, white/brn, brn)?

It's really a poor design with the RJ 45 accepting station ports but I always take a patch cable and cut the one end off and terminate it on a block. You just need to make sure you cut it down the way the pairs are for the type of cable your using. It seems a little odd cross connecting to mixed matched pairs like that put it works, I've done it this way numerous times without issues.
