Tried adding a 2nd handset to a T7406e yesterday. 2nd handset is brand new with a new battery.

Problem: New handset kept and keeps powering off. Had a hell of a time trying to register that handset. When I finally got it registered, the old handset lost it's link to the base. Finally uninstalled all and returned to work on my bench.

I managed to finally get the new handset assigned to port ID 1 and registered. Works but still powers off when you try to use it and won't power on until it's returned to base. Battery is fully charged and verified with a volt meter. I assume it's defective.

Old handset keeps saying "No Link To Base". How can I get that to link? As it is, I can't even return the base & old handset to client.

Both ports are lit green on base unit. 3rd port is flashing orange but I didn't connect it. 4th port has no light, which is normal I believe as I didn't connect that one either. Anyways lights 3 & 4 don't concern me...just the other 2 issues.

Here my system is a CICS 7.1 and it's connected to ports 109 & 110. His is a 3x8 DR5-DS.

The battery is defective or the new phone won't charge it. i've seen too often, the 7406e have had a bad run. Old handset still trying to connect as handset 1? Also make sure of your wiring to base, as it's not standard and you are using an 8 conductor patch cord that is verified as good.

Swapped the batteries. Now the new one is working! Thanks, but the old one still says the same. Shouldn't be trying to connect to port ID 1 as I reset the phones and deregistered them before I configured the new handset.

Make sure you have ports connected correctly

RJ45 Wiring T7406e Base Station
Handset 568B 568A
1 W/O, O/W W/G, GW
2 G/W, B/W O/W, B/W
3 W/B, G/W W/B, G/W
4 W/BR, BR/W W/BR, BR/W

T568a being used. Pr 1 = W/G - G/W & {Pr 2 = W/O - B/W. Like I said I have both lights showing green as if connected to base. Just the handset won't connect to the base...

No link to base" = no connection between base and ksu.

If there is no connection between the handset and the base, the display will read "Must Register".

Biggest mistake techs make is de-registering existing set.

Make sure to tell it what Port ID it will be and do not tell it to use the one/s in use already.
Then you can register the handset

The other mistake is do not send the SS code to the base, that only needs to be done from the first handset that was registered otherwise do the rest as indicated (could be for older T7406 only)

And finally the RJ45 which is not standard....I am not in agreement with Marv's chart.
Looking at it tab down here is order of Pin numbers:
12 34 56 78

12 = WB/BW - Handset ID 1
34 = WO/OW - Handset ID 2
56 = WG/GW - Handset ID 3
78 = WBr/BrW Handset ID 4

You make need to Reset all handsets and start fresh.

The guide is the bigger 64 page one.

Configuration Guide

I've got all 4 ports connected to the base. All 4 have green lights. Still "No link to Base". I even tested all 4 ports with a phone and they all work. Fom the manual:
LED status indicators
The base station has five LED status indicators: one to show the status of the base station (power
LED), and one for each of the four possible handsets (channel LEDs). The power LED indicates
the current mode of the base station. The power LED is green and is either solid or flashing. The
channel LEDs are tri-color (red, green, and orange) and are always solid. See Table 4 and Table 5
for details on the LED status indicators.
Table 4 Power status LED
Status Cadence
Active: 1 second on, 1 second off
Registration mode, power on, initializing: 125 ms on, 125 ms off
Deregistration mode: 500 ms on, 500 ms off
No handset: Solid

Table 5 Channel status LEDs
Status: Color indicators
Line not connected: Off
Line initializing: Orange
Line idle: Green
Line ringer on: Red
Line ringer off: Green
Line talk: Red

Curly, all I have is the 58 page Installer's Guide. I'll google for the other.

As for the wiring of the 8p8c, this switch like any other can't read what colour is used where. Therefore if using T568A, then w/g & g/w for the 1st handset and w/o & b/w for the 2nd should work. If wiring as a normal tech would do, then i agree with you, but like I said the base can't see the colours being used.

One other thing, you must not continue using the RJ45 in conjunction with the RJ11
If using one set only use RJ11
If using multiple sets use only RJ45

So if all lights are solid green the there is digital signal.
If wired incorrectly could be half signal from 2 different ports.

Dip switch should be down down up

As I said you may need to reset the handsets and start fresh and do pages 40 and 41 to the T.
Maybe wait more than 5 seconds for the base to enter registration mode....this rings a bell.

OK, so I deregistered all the handsets, reset the one I could use and got the new one up & going using port 2 and registered. Old handset still does same thing.

Next solution? I just confirmed with the client that he does indeed want to have the 2nd handset...

Curly,
12 = WB/BW - Handset ID 1
34 = WO/OW - Handset ID 2
56 = WG/GW - Handset ID 3
78 = WBr/BrW Handset ID 4

That's a custom built plug.

My coulour code chart is for an off the shelf data cable.

Ah ok thanks, I thought you were describing the port on the back as I was.

Best thing you can do is try working handset on 3 other ports then you will know whats what and what needs replacing.

Sorry, can't do ANYTHING with this handset. Because it's always "No Link To Base", I can't assign a port ID, nor register it, unless you've got some other way...

Per Marv - "No link to base" = no connection between base and ksu.

Double check the wiring based on the info given, especially your patch cord to BIX or whatever Mcgyver you did.

"I could use and got the new one up & going using port 2 and registered."
Ok so try the same handset on ports 1, 3 and 4.

Like I said....Sorry, can't do ANYTHING with this handset. Because it's always "No Link To Base", I can't assign a port ID, nor register it, unless you've got some other way...

T7406e is connected as follows: 29/109, 30/110, 31/111 & 32/112. Working handset is on 31/111. Tried to intercom each ext, ext 29, 30 & 32 all ring/no answer. Was hoping that would force the connection. Checked in maintenance, all 4 show as M7310's and idle, unless I'm using 31/111 then it shows Busy as it should.

Next I unplugged the 8p8c and connected to TCM1 on another port, rebooted the base...same thing. Replaced the battery, same results.

Therefore I'm getting the impression this old handset is toast even though it worked before....

I get your handset wont do anything however I was asking if the working handset can register fine on all 4 ports.

As for the handset stuck in No Link does it say that when the base is powered down?

It sounds like 2 issues.

If you can't change the handset number BEFORE you try to register then the set is defective. Changing the handset number has nothing to do with registration as it must be set prior to registering.

Marv ccna

Sorry. Been busy on another project.
Curly....yes it says it even with the base off.
Marv....he was having issues with it so that's why he wanted a new handset. Have returned the working set to client and told him I would return if / when we find a solution. He's happy with the new one....
