Hello, Our phone system (Nortel T7316E) has 3 lines coming into it and the 2nd & 3rd lines are lit up and say that the line in use when you try to pick-up that line. No one is using the line and we can not clear either line 2 or 3.

Any help would be gerat.

They are either locked up or being used for an outbound transfer/toll fraud. either pull the jumper off the bix field and re-punch it down or if your not a tech, pull the plug on the system, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. you could also disable the line card in programming but that means getting into the system via a phone set.

It might be a good idea to figure out why the lines are hung in the first place. As Wallysworld said, it can be toll fraud, but it can be for good reasons, too.

When you see "Line in use" on the display after pressing a line button, it means that a call is active on that line. However, the call isn't connected to any set; it's handled by the system itself. There are a few features that will cause the system to handle a call itself:

[ul]
[li]Direct Inward System Access[/li]
[li]External Call Forward[/li]
[li]External Transfer[/li]
[li]Line Redirection[/li]
[li]Unsupervised Conference[/li]
[/ul]

If someone in your office has used one of those features, it explains why the lines are busy. The system will release the lines once the calls are over.

Otherwise, any method suggested by Wallysworld will clear the lines.

Thanks for the help. We pulled the plug and the battery back-up and that seemed to clear it. We think it maybe related to our hands free unit, which is having some issues.

Thanks again.
