Low impact question wrt to LCD troubles.
I've got 3 sets that have LCD fails.. the behavior is odd,
1 is like contrast is set to the lowest setting when showing fixed time and date..or when displaying DND etc, but if i do a F*0, then the LCD fills in with electro babble at full contrast.

another unit looks like the contrast is way up.

Q:
Any suggestions as to why these malf like this?
leaky caps? cockaroaches? anyone ever take the time to pull them apart to see what's all going on?

Thanks to anyone thats ever been a helpful poster.
I've been able to manage my MICS 7, RAD, and program sets for years because of you helpful folk, and of course, rtfm'ing.

Aloha,
nick
PS if there's interest, and I find the time, (or need a distraction) I'll see what i can see when i pull these fails apart, and report back.

If you need replacements, try Refurb Supplies: refurbsupplies.com they may have the parts you need.

An important tip for these LCDs. There are two versions that look almost identical and they are not cross compatible.

At some point Nortel changed the driver IC for the LCD and had to change the processor on the main circuit board to talk to this new driver IC. The newer version is called "E1" the first version didn't have a "version" so I call it "non-E1"

We have a good web page describing the difference here:

I am by far not the experts the others are here, but working in a metal foundry/machine shop, I have to deal with funky issues from the E series phones alot. Most of the time its from dirt/debris and/or metal shavings. I've opened them up and there isnt really a whole lot of stuff going on inside of these sets. After a good air bath, sometimes cleaning but make sure you use proper electronics cleaner and something that will not leave a residue, some of the sets come back to life.

Opening them will void your warranty, if you still have one, and is a fairly easy process. Best of luck and if you cant get em to work, try one of the refurb sites above or via Google.
