I got a call from a customer that the guard house T7316e that is connected to the Clubhouse CICS and is about 3,000 feet away is having these problems:

RED Light Flashing sometime for no reason
First or Second digit is misdialing on outside calls
Clicking and Crackling

I am wondering if the voltage is the problme since it is so far away.

Can the voltage be increased so the digital signal is boosted?

If so how would I do this without blowing up the set or CICS?

I found one at Metroline Direct for 29.00. Do you know how it is connected to the phone it says it will accomidate up to 3 sets

From what I remember, it uses the "spare" wiring pair in the phones cable cord. In the UK, we had to connect it at the socket end.

More reading on a UK Compact plus system has this below.

(Without an auxiliary power supply, the maximum length of the line is 300 metres or 1000 feet. With an auxiliary power supply, the maximum length is 790 metres or 2500 feet.)

If there is not enough power, that is, less than eight volts, the telephone resets itself.

Another Norstar Modular guide has this below.

Station Auxiliary Power Supply (SAPS) - To provide power for a CAP module or for Norstar telephones more than 305m (1000 ft) from the KSU.

Station Auxiliary Power Supply (SAPS)

Installation
General

The Station Auxiliary Power Supply provides auxiliary
regulated direct current power as required by some Norstar
applications. The installation instructions given here explain how to install the Norstar Station Auxiliary Power Supply in long loop applications and for the Central Answering Position

Module (CAP).
Components
The Norstar Station Auxiliary Power Supply consists of:
l a power supply (an ac power transformer, input 110 Vat, 60
Hz; output 24 Vdc, 250 mA)
. a 2.1 m (7 ft), four-wire conductor line cord
Long Loop Applications
The Norstar Station Auxiliary Power Supply may be used to
enable up to three Norstar telephones (M7208, M7310 or
M7324) to operate on station loops over 305 m (1000 feet), up to 790 m (2600 feet), 24 AWG.
Installation
1.
Ensure that each long loop (>305 m (1000 ft.), 24AWG
wire) Norstar telephone has four-wire conductor station
wiring between the station block and the common equipment room. (See Figure 9.4).

2.
At the station connection block (#625 type, or equivalent),
connect the four wires of the station wiring cable to the four screw terminals as shown in Figure 9.4.
Make note of the color codes of the positive and negative
wires.

Note:

The telephone can appear to function normally even though
If the Norstar telephone is equipped with a two-wire
conductor line cord, replace it with the four-wire conductor
cord provided.
In the common equipment room, terminate the positive station wire (noted in step 2) on the positive screw terminal of the power supply.
Terminate the negative station wire on the negative screw terminal of the power supply. Repeat for up to three Norstar telephone station runs.
(A four screw connection box may be used to make multiple set polarity has been reversed. If unsure of polarity, use a voltage 4 Conductor LineCord to Norstar Telephone Station Block (#625 or equivalent) meter for confirmation.

if it had been working before i would say you have a wet cable going to the gaurd house.

I agree with drtelephone but FYI anyway the -24 is on pin 5 and the neutral is on pin 2 (phone data is on pins 3 and 4 of course)

It was always a little flaky from the day it was installed

I need to pull the tech item on the SAPS. the pinning I gave above is valid for a CAP module, I think the pinout you will need is the pins 3 and 4. I might have a SAPS on the shelf in the office. I'll check it tomorrow unless someone else beats me to it.

pretty sure SAP is good to 2600 ft and goes on orange pr.make sure line cord is 4 conductor

6 months until ski season starts...sadly i must resign myself to the warmer weather"this will include a normal 8-5 work day, 5 days a week"

One thing you can try until you get the SAP is to use the two pairs in parallel. This will cut the resistance and thus the voltage drop in half.

If this phone was working then you have a bad cable if the audio is bad the sap will not do you any good you are losing data to a bad cable pr I have phone without sap at over 4000 ft the phone will get noise at about 5000 ft but it will still pass date I have 2 system that have 5600 ft of cable between then and I can us a phone at one KSU to program the other This sound like a GND on the cable pair if the is a noise on the phone check the cable pr if it has over 1K ohm GND on it the phone will not work check the other cable PR they may be ok

A funny test if no tester is to put 3 new boxes (1,000 feet each) of cable side by side by the KSU and connect them together and test that phone. If runs good then probably a wet pair or corroded hence some grounding.
