We currently have a T1 connection to the internet through Verizon and for the past two months or so the signal disappears anywhere from a couple of hours to 24 hours plus. In each case the alarm code on the Netopia router is yellow and the Alarm indicator on the smart jack at the demark is on. In every case by the time Verizon tests the circuit its backup and tech support tells me that everything is testing clean. This is very frustrating, can anyone give me some insight.

Thanks,
John

How long did Verizon test it?

DOes the Smart Jack have a serial port? If so connect to that and look at the error stats before calling the Telco.

Does the Netopia have a built in CSU? If so, specifically ask the tester (always tell them to have the tester call before testing) to test to the CSU.

Assuming ESF the Telco should be getting the eror stats form the CSU, so they should easily be able to verify that there was a down period.

If there is a way to look at the CSU stats form the Netopia's software take a look. Be ssure to look before you call because the telco can reset the error counters. Many CSU's also have a user error log that cannot be reset by the telco.

ISDNman,

The smart jack does have a serial port. The csu is built into the router and ESF is used. I'll try plugging into the smart jack. When the link goes down and the smart jack issues an Alarm I am unable to ping the routers default gateway from the router's console.

Which alarm do you see on the smart jack?

IIRC correctly the smart jack is auto detect in terms of speed. A standard DB-9 M-F straight through cable should work. I think VT-100 i spreferred, but not necessary.

You hit enter three times or it may be space three times to synchronize the rate. The rest is pretty much self explanatory.
