I am trying to figure out what voltages are on a T1 circuit coming from tel.co.'s smart jack. I need to put surge protection on the circuit before it gets to the IAD/channel bank. Basically I need to now the approximate clamping voltage required.

You can buy protectors for them. Towermax makes one.

Thanks ! I will give them a call. I tried ITW Linx tech support but ended up in a mailbox. If I know the voltages I can figure it out from there.

Kevin,
Thanks for the info-I will plow through it!

Good link Kevin! But I did find some errors and omissions, otherwise it is a good DS1 history...

ITW/Linx makes protectors also. As far as line voltage is concerned, the customer side should have no more than 5 or 8 volts from the DEMARC, since Telco has not powered any CSUs since the late 1980s. But to be safe and cover all the bases I would suggest that you use the same protection level as a POTS or voice circuit. Using the ITW/Linx protector, the voltage rating would be 235 volts.
