My provider is asking me for answers to the following configuration questions for a T1. My system is configured in KEY mode and I want each line in the T1 to appear on a seperate button (line Appearance) on my phones. I have 3 digit ext nimbers

Inbound/Outbound –signalling--- Immediate , Wink or delay

Signal type----Ground start, loop start or E&M

How many digits to be delivered?

If you want line appearance, then you will need to configure them for ground start or loop start trunks, but ground is the preferred method. There won't be any signalling or inbound digits with ground start trunks.

so which should I tell them, Ground Start or Loop Start?

Besides, if you stay in KEY mode, you can not configure the T1 for Tie Lines, which uses the incoming digits.

I am not looking for Tie lines. I basicly am using the T1 as 24 pots lines

Since you are using this as a standard T1 you should order them as 'ground start', as 'loop start' will cause you disconnect problems. Note that the Merlin's Reliable Disconnect setting has no effect on T1 circuits programmed as Loop Start. The draw back is you probably will not get caller ID.

Actually, merlinman, a T1 programmed as loopstart will support CID. Again though, there are disconnect problems with loop start channels, so it becomes a choice between poor service or CID.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE with your statement FRANKE, Have you had experience with this actually working?

Not to create an argument, but as a former Tier 3 Engineer with AT&T, Lucent and Avaya on this product, (since BEFORE IT WAS A PRODUCT) I have never heard of Caller ID working as you described.

Bell Labs told me (and it is documented) that Caller ID only works on Loop Start Modules and PRI service.

Or, as they say in Missouri, SHOW ME !

Yepper, have seen it work, however, as I said, do to the disconnect problems the customers have always switched to ground start and giving up the CID or PRI if they had the number of trunks to warrent it.

franke

Were these trunks actually connected to a T1 card, or thru a channel bank?

2 customers- standard T1 emulating loopstart trunks. FYI, at the time, Lucent had told us that they do not support loopstart on a T1, not that it wouldn't work, but because of the problems associated with it. As you know, we all probably make this machine do things that it's not supposed to do or are not supported :)

So Ground start it is

If they insist on signaling and digits, what should I tell them?

In this case, 'Ground Start' is the signalling, digits are not applicable. The numbers the C.O. assign are the numbers associated with the channels, if you are looking to have calls go directly to an individuals extension number, then you will need to add DID (Direct Inward Dial) emulated channels to your T1. For example, depending on the number of employees and call volume, you may want to have 12 channels emulating Ground Start trunks (for Main incoming number plus hunt-to numbers and outgoing calls) and 12 channels emulating DID trunks. A typical setup would be:

For the T1:
B8ZS
ESF
Robbed Bit
Channels 1-12 assigned as Ground Start
Channels 13-24 assigned as DID (signaling would be 'wink/wink'). Numbers and number of digits are rependant on the provider and may require that you renumber your extension.
