I'm a bit stuck on a solution for a problem.
First our current network config:
ISP (T1) -> Cisco Router -> Linux Router/Firewall -> Pix -> LAN
Our Cisco router has an IP address to access our ISP's network, and the Linux router has our public IP address assigned by our ISP.
What we would like to do is add a DOCSIS connection to allow for fail over capabilities. Now our local cable supplier will assign a static IP address in their servers and our equipment is required to receive the IP via DHCP.
First problem is can Cisco IOS do this with a DOCSIS card or would the Linux box receive the IP address and the DOCSIS card is simply a medium conversion from DOCSIS to IP?
The second problem would be related to actually failing over. Since I'm not aware how DOCSIS actually works with Cisco devices as I have yet to work with it, where would fail over have to occur? I would assume the Linux box would be required to handle this, is this correct thinking?
As you can see I'm a bit lost, and unfortunately where I live isn't exactly what I would consider a tech savy location, and I have no references to ask. The cable provider won't answer any questions claiming that I would need to ask my local cable provider, and I can't imagine they would have a clue.
Any input would be HUGELY appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
