I know that questions concerning repairing and restoring SYSVOL have already been posted. However, I've never been able too find any explanation as to why login scripts, group policies and subdirectories randomly "disappear" from the SYSVOL directory.

Does anyone know what causes this problem? Has anything ever been documented on Microsoft's site? I do know that MS now provides a tool with Win2003 to restore default group policies. Does that mean that they know there is a problem but just can't fix it?

It's rather difficult to try and prevent this from happening when know one seems to know why it does. I don't think that having to restore the SYSVOL directory on a regular basis is an acceptable system maintenance function.
