HI and merry Xmas

Hopefully this problem and solution in one will save someone wasting the 4 hours it took out of my xmas :)

Problem

Windows XP home, all programme and OS updates to date including IE7 recently installed and logitech webcam software version 10.4 0140.

Upon reboot the welcome music plays, the speaker / volume icon appears temporarily but then vanishes later in the stages of populating the systray. A flash of the Control panel Sounds and Audio Devices tab can sometimes be seen by the systray at this point.
Sound then not working. Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices tab now says no Audio device, Audio tab , sound playback device has set itself to modem #0 (ist entry in list). Can reset this to AC97 audio though (3rd in list), set this as default, set use only defaults etc and everything works until next re-boot.

Eliminiated video drivers, audio drivers, Via drivers, every other driver, active x controls, etc. Experimentlly Removed recent Logitech driver and software (because this is pretty buggy based on registry driven event viewer warning levels but not apparntly the problem here). Let Microsoft update the sound driver via device manager with the wrong one (c-mediaAC97 delivered when Realtek AC97 was needed) Thanks a lot - arrrrgh Happy hour cleaning registry etc.

Issue finally traced to Quicktime player 6.5.1 where under Player>edit>preferences>quicktime settings> top drop box to show Sound out:
"Choose a device for playback" had somehow set itself to waveout modem 0, Manually reSet this to Waveout Realtek AC97 and exit. (No save option)

(I have never seen, let alone set, this tab before)

Problem has now gone away. Presumably quicktime loads a stub at boot up (although it is set to NOT have a systray icon) and silently overrides existing audio settings for its own reasons. Nerry Xmas!

Thank you for sharing that with the forum, and season greetings to you and everyone else too.
