Probably obvious to most but...
How do I add/remove icons to/from the systray, by the clock?

These are running programs in your startup group.....

First make sure you know what your stopping.....give info first please as the fix can be threefold....depending on what, when, where and why.....and if you may want it again sometime in the future......

using Win98se.

Task Scheduler is one I don't need.

I may want to recover it, but not likely.
If the icon is removed from systray can it be replaced on desktop instead and run from there?

Tony

I never allow systray to run on my pcs. I also never allow Task Schedular to run on my pcs. That is un-necessary M$ crap.

...Mac

Humpty Dumpty was pushed!!

Yes.....but no need to.....Right click task scheduler in systray and choose open....now choose advanced menu and choose "Stop using task scheduler"..... and Poof...Viola~...

If you ever want to use it Go:
My Computer>Scheduled Tasks>Advanced Menu>"Start Using Task Scheduler"

Yes, that works for task scheuler, thanks.

What about other programs? They don't seem to be so straightforward.

Tony

Start > Run> type msconfig>Start-Up tab. Uncheck what you don't want and re-start.

Hey.....where's my *star*?.....:>)

I got lots more.....including Reg keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Services......

and look for same keys under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER.....

Be very careful, as recovery will require you to reinstall whatever you deleted.

Also if Task Scheduler reappears on restart....
Remove that string from the above aforementioned
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run....and corresponding....HKEY_CURRENT_USER

DELETE THE STRINGS(in the Right Pane) NOT THE KEY(Folder in Left Pane)

I use this myself:
It's free..along with Startup Monitor

ANFPS26's version is the Safe Way to do it...and I probably should've suggested this first to you to be safe.....

You should try that first....then if problems persist...go on with my other suggestions.....

Please make a Backup first....

Start>Run>Scanreg /backup

Also to get to Reg.......

Start>Run>Regedit

If you have this line(default)
C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun
under this key,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run......your Reg is automatically backed up once a day

Peace
